About the Artist
A native of Belton, Texas, Raymond Chapman has spent the past sixty years pursuing a passion for lettering, signs and the graphic arts. While other young kids drew horses, tanks and war scenes, Ray was fascinated with letters and words. This unique interest led him to be a life long student of signs, posters and illustration.
While having no formal art education, he did become friends with Killeen watercolor artist John Carter in the early 80’s. His teachers became books and observation of works by fellow sign artists across the nation.
After retiring from his sign business, Chapman Design Studio, in 2019, Ray began an intense study of the fine arts. He says that he now has a degree from the “University of You Tube”.
Chapman’s drawings and paintings convey his love of Central Texas and the landscapes of his youth. Many of his creations are from memories and photos of now abandoned places.
Raymond still lives in Belton with his wife, Jeanne, his high school sweetheart from the early 60’s. They have two grown sons and their families also living in Central Texas.
